‘I miss her’: Andrew Garfield talks grief over late mother with Elmo

Andrew Garfield and Elmo shared a heartwarming moment on Friday when the actor spoke about the grief that comes with losing a loved one. And the clip is going viral.
The conversation came about after Elmo checked in with Garfield to ask him how he was doing, just like he did with everybody on “Sesame Street” that day. Garfield tells Elmo about his late mother, Lynne, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2019, and how missing her makes him feel closer to her in a “strange way.”
“Oh, I’m so happy to see you, Elmo. You have no idea,” Garfield said in the clip, which has gotten millions of views. “I’m doing OK, you know … I’m just thinking about my mom today. You know, she passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her. I miss her a lot.”
Elmo extended his condolences to Garfield, who explained that it’s “actually kind of OK to miss somebody.”
“Elmo always feel really sad when he misses somebody,” Elmo responded.

That sadness, Garfield explained, is “kind of a gift, a lovely thing to feel in a way because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them.”
“When I miss someone, I remember,” he continued. “When I miss my mom, I remember all of the cuddles I used to get from her, all the hugs I used to get from her.”
Garfield says he’s happy to have the memories of “my mum and the joy she brought me and the joy she brought my brother and my dad and everyone she ever met, everyone around her.”
“So, when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So, I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time,” Garfield said.
Elmo “really loved” listening and was “very happy” to have Garfield talk about his late mother, telling him that he, too, was “going to think about and celebrate his mommy.”
“Nothing would make me happier, and nothing would make her happy because I gotta tell you something, I gotta tell you a secret,” Garfield says. “Elmo was my mummy’s favorite.”
The clip ends with both Garfield and Elmo hugging and saying: “I love you.”
People are in their feels over Garfield’s unexpected and heartwarming conversation with Elmo, with many taking to social media to share thoughts, feelings and reactions after they watched the clip.
For some, Garfield’s willingness to talk about his grief has made processing traumatic memories, like the death of a loved one, easier.
“I can’t see anything my screens all blurry what is going on,” one user shared.
Here’s what the internet is saying about it.
